Myth of Apep and Bastet

2023
Oil on Arches paper
14" x 8"

Bastet has fascinated me since I "met" her in a class. We live with a batch of cats, so they agree with stature of Bastet in ancient Egypt.

Apep and Bastet face off before their nightly battle. The pale green snake on a mid-dark purple background sits to the left of center while a mid-dark purple cat faces it on a light green background. The work is mainly these two colors, each side mirroring the other. At the top a moon mirrors a sun. The characters sit on the underworld waters beneath their feet. Small details of reddish orange bring smaller patterns and details to the work. Bastet wears a subtle aegis.
